United States Attorney Vanessa Waldref has appointed Assistant United States Attorney Frieda Zimmerman as the District Election Officer for the Eastern District of Washington. This appointment is part of the Justice Department's nationwide Election Day Program for the general election on November 5, 2024. AUSA Zimmerman will oversee complaints related to voting rights, threats against election officials or staff, and election fraud in consultation with Justice Department Headquarters.
"Every citizen must be able to vote without interference or discrimination and to have that vote counted in a fair and free election," stated U.S. Attorney Waldref. She emphasized that election officials should serve without facing unlawful threats of violence, asserting that the Department of Justice is committed to protecting the integrity of the electoral process.
The Department of Justice plays a crucial role in addressing discrimination, intimidation at polling stations, threats against election workers, and fraud. The Election Day Program aims to ensure public confidence by providing local contact points for reporting potential federal election law violations.
Federal laws protect against crimes such as threatening violence against election officials, voter intimidation or bribery, vote buying or selling, impersonating voters, altering vote counts, ballot box stuffing, and marking ballots without voter consent. The Voting Rights Act also ensures voters can mark their own ballots or receive assistance if needed due to disability or language barriers.
Waldref reiterated the importance of voting rights: "The right to vote is the cornerstone of American democracy." She stressed that it is essential for those entitled to this right to exercise it freely and for those attempting corruption to face justice. AUSA/DEO Zimmerman will be available on election day at (509) 353-2767 for any voting rights concerns or reports of fraud.
Additionally, FBI special agents will be ready across field offices nationwide to handle allegations of election fraud on election day. The local FBI office can be contacted at (509) 458-8100. Complaints regarding federal voting rights law violations can also be submitted directly to the Civil Rights Division via their website or by phone at 800-253-3931.
Waldref encouraged public involvement: "Ensuring free and fair elections depends in large part on the assistance of the American electorate." She urged anyone with specific information about voting issues or fraud to inform the Department of Justice promptly.
In cases involving violence or intimidation crimes, individuals are advised to call 911 before contacting federal authorities since state and local police usually have quicker response capabilities in emergencies.
