Whitworth Theatre is proud to present its spring main-stage production, Saint Joan, this month in Cowles Auditorium. Showtimes are March 10, 11, 17 and 18 at 7:30 p.m. and March 12 and 19 at 2 p.m.
Written by George Bernard Shaw and premiering in 1923, three years after Joan of Arc was canonized by the Roman Catholic Church, the play focuses on the last two years of Joan’s life. In this epic tale, Shaw portrays Joan not as a saint or witch, but as a farm girl whose focus and faith rocked the secular and religious world.
Whitworth’s production of Saint Joan is directed by Brian Tyrrell, a retired Centralia College professor and a member of the Actors Equity Association. Tyrrell’s acting credits include seasons with the Oregon and Alabama Shakespeare Festivals and a national tour with The National Shakespeare Company out of New York. He has directed and/or produced more than 100 productions on the academic level. Credits include productions in Seattle (The 5th Avenue Theatre) and Longview, Tacoma and Olympia, Wash. Tyrrell is the recipient of the Gold Medallion for service to the Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival.
