MASTERCLASS: Fifth and sixth graders at Scott Elementary took part in a masterclass today with DeAundre' Woods, cast member of the Broadway musical “Hamilton.”
Woods explained that, before going on tour, he and his cast members rehearse eight hours a day - every day - for six weeks.
“I’ve been doing this show for four years and we still rehearse,” he told students. “Rehearsal is such an important part of performance because there’s always something to learn. If you’re preparing and doing your best in the process, the outcome will work itself out.”
Students heard Woods sing, worked on some warmups themselves, then practiced the song “My Shot” as a group.
“These are just words on a page. Not until you breathe life into them will they become a story that’s colorful and joyful for the audience,” he said, calling out the line ‘When you're living on your knees, you rise up.”
“When you sing this, I want you to start it from the floor and then bring it up through the roof,” he said. “I want the neighborhood to wake up and say, ‘What? Am I dreaming Hamilton or is Hamilton actually happening in my neighborhood right now?’”
Hamilton is playing in Spokane through May 22 as part of the STCU Best of Broadway series by WestCoast Entertainment.
