BE ART OF THE SOLUTION: Students and teachers from The Community School visited the Shadle Park Library campus to watch the installation of a new public art piece commissioned by the Spokane Public Library and Spokane Arts.
The artwork, by Tacoma artist Jasmine Iona Brown, features eight, colorful metal cutout sculptures of people reading in the grass outside the library.
“I wanted to encourage people to sit on the grass to read and socialize when the weather is nice, and make something that would tie these three spaces together,” Brown explained, referring to the new library, the aquatic center and the water tower.
TCS students are participating in a monthlong unit learning about public art, taking tours and meeting with artists. They recently viewed Terrain’s Black Lives Matter mural with contributing artist and Spokane Arts program director Shantell Jackson, and explored the stone labyrinth near Polly Judd Park. The project will culminate in the creation of their own public art.
If you’re in the mood to appreciate some art, tomorrow is #FirstFriday! Artwork by SPS elementary students will be on display at River Park Square’s Kress Gallery this month.
