Spokane Police Department (SPD) is taking part in a Drive Sober campaign through Labor Day.
The campaign “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” launched on Aug. 28 and is continuing through Labor Day, according to a press release from Spokane Police Department.
There were 231 deaths in Washington State in 2019 from drivers who were under the influence of alcohol and the Washington Traffic Safety Commission is attempting to make that number zero.
The department explained that those who are impaired from substances including alcohol and cannabis, are more likely to be involved in fatal crashes and that the risk of being involved in a crash rises with the use of these substances, according to the press release.
As part of the campaign, SPD reminds drivers to arrange for a ride home after drinking or to stay put and not get on the road. Those who are witnessing someone considering driving while in an unsafe condition are encouraged to offer the individual a place to stay until sober or call 911 if they cannot influence the individual’s decision.
