Spokane mayor, council President and Spokane Police Department have been discussing ways to reform the community’s relationship with law enforcement.

Mayor Nadine Woodward said that the situation is a delicate one that needs care approaching, according to a press release from the city of Spokane.

“The discussion is complex and multi-layered and one that requires significant care and consideration,” Woodward said in the press release. . “For the past several weeks we have been listening to the feedback from the community and discussing how to wrap those perspectives into healthy growth for our community.”

The numerous tenets being approached all point to the need for safety and security for all parties involved and have been developed as a joint effort over the last few weeks.

The new reforms will begin to be introduced over the coming weeks.

Police Chief Craig Meidl said that safety is at the heart of all the department does.

“The safety of our community, people we encounter and our officers who are part of those interactions,” Meidl said in the press release.
