If approved by the city, Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena could be transformed into a homeless shelter, according to the Spokesman-Review.
Once the Guardians Foundation moves from the Spokane Library and Cannon Street facilities, it would be the newest homeless shelter. There are 110 people, along with bedding and resources, currently at the two locations.
Guardians CEO Mike Shaw told the Spokesman-Review that the Spokane Public Facilities District approved a 90-day stay via Mayor Nadine Woodward’s proposal.
While Brian Coddington, city spokesperson, didn’t guarantee the move, he did say that the city would be rolling out news about the shelter sooner than later.
Shaw was all for the transition and told the Spokesman-Review, “It’s an ideal temporary spot. It’s a blank slate right now.”
He also had plans to sit down with companies near the arena, Flour Mill and David’s Pizza, to give them a chance to express their possible issues with the plan.
