Date: January 29, 2023

Time: 2:00pm – 3:30pm

Location: Central Conference Room B & Lounge

What do we as Americans owe to other members of our society? How can we relate to one another? This month, we’ll discuss John Stuart Mill’s text ‘On Liberty’ and how it relates to our democracy.

Let’s talk about what we want our society to look like!

Join Spokane Public Library’s Current Affairs Specialist, Shane Gronholz, for a monthly ‘salon’ centered around discussions on what you believe the rights and responsibilities of citizenship in the United States are. This month, we’ll discuss John Stuart Mill’s classical text On Liberty, available freely here: https://socialsciences.mcmaster.ca/econ/ugcm/3ll3/mill/liberty.pdf. Reading is recommended but not required.

If you don’t have a chance to read the text, read this illustrated summary of On Liberty!

Spokane Civics Salon will meet from 2:00-3:30 PM on the last Sunday of every month. Each Salon will be focused on a particular text.

This event will take place in Conference Room B on the third floor of Central Library.

What is a salon?
A Salon is a gathering of people guided by a host who come together to exchange ideas and increase their knowledge through meaningful conversation.

Shane holds a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Colorado Boulder. He has taught courses in logic, ethics, social and political philosophy, and the philosophy of law. He has been published in the areas of the nature of rationality, human well-being, and the ethics of personal relationships.
