The Gonzaga Bulldogs women’s rowing team won the Fawley Cup for the second year in a row and the fifth time in program history after competing against Washington State on the Snake River, according to an April 11 announcement.
The victory is significant for Gonzaga, as it demonstrates their continued strength in collegiate rowing and builds momentum for upcoming competitions. The Fawley Cup is a longstanding rivalry event between these two programs.
Head coach Mark Voorhees said, “I’m really proud of how the entire team raced today. It was a good next step in the process and every crew learned something. We’ve got a lot of speed to find in the coming weeks, but battling hard and coming away with some wins today is a feeling we’ll definitely enjoy until we get back to work on Monday morning.”
Gonzaga started strong by winning the first varsity eight (1V8) race with a time of 7:20.88, just ahead of Washington State’s 7:23.04. In other races, Washington State took first place in the second varsity eight (2V8) and third varsity eight (3V8), while Gonzaga secured victories in both four-person events (1V4 and 2V4) as well as finishing ahead in the fourth varsity eight (4V8).
The results highlight competitive performances from both teams across multiple boat classes throughout the regatta. Detailed lineups included athletes such as Ava Beekman coxing for Gonzaga’s V8 boat and Katherine Barnhart leading their 2V8 squad.
Looking forward, Voorhees indicated that while there are areas for improvement, he remains optimistic about his team’s potential heading into future races.
