The Gonzaga Bulldogs men’s rowing team competed against the Santa Clara Broncos on April 11 at Silver Lake, with several close races and a narrow finish in the varsity eight event.
The meet was significant for both teams as it featured competitive matchups across multiple boat classes. The most notable race of the day was the varsity eight, where lead changes occurred throughout and Santa Clara finished just two feet ahead of Gonzaga.
“It was good racing today by all boats,” head coach Dan Gehn said. “The race of the day was the V8 with multiple leads changes and a close finish of two feet.”
Santa Clara won the varsity eight race with a time of 5:44.4, narrowly beating Gonzaga’s time of 5:44.8. In the second varsity eight, Santa Clara posted a winning time of 5:56.16 while Gonzaga followed at 6:00.06. The Broncos also secured victory in the third varsity eight (6:05.7), ahead of two Gonzaga entries (6:10.2 and 6:26.7).
Lineups for each boat were provided, listing coxswains and rowers for each crew competing in varsity, junior varsity, third varsity, and fourth varsity events.
As teams look forward to future competitions this season, close finishes like those seen at Silver Lake may provide momentum and learning opportunities for upcoming regattas.
