Congressman Michael Baumgartner of Washington’s 5th Congressional District has announced the launch of the second annual “Classroom to the Capitol” contest, aimed at recognizing outstanding teachers in his district. The contest will select one high school teacher who demonstrates dedication, innovation, and a positive impact on students to attend the 2026 State of the Union address as Baumgartner’s guest.
“Teachers ignite curiosity, build confidence, and shape the leaders of tomorrow,” said Congressman Baumgartner. “Last year’s inaugural contest was an incredible experience, and I was honored to have Stacey Nash from Wilbur-Creston join me at the State of the Union. This year, I’m excited to continue the tradition, giving students across Eastern Washington the chance to spotlight the teachers who make a lasting difference in their lives.”
The contest is open to all high school teachers in Washington’s 5th Congressional District. Nominations can be submitted by students, parents, fellow teachers, or school administrators. Each nomination must include a short essay between 250 and 500 words explaining why the nominated teacher deserves to attend. The essay should highlight how the teacher has influenced students, their creativity in teaching, commitment to excellence, and any notable achievements.
Nominations are to be sent via email to collin.tracy@mail.house.gov with “State of the Union Teacher Nomination” as the subject line. Submissions should also include the teacher’s full name, school affiliation, and contact information. The deadline for nominations is February 8, 2026.
The winner will be selected based on their influence on students and contributions to their school community. According to House Ethics guidelines, while Members of Congress receive a ticket for such events and may distribute them as they choose (as long as tickets are not sold or used for fundraising), recipients are responsible for their own travel and accommodation expenses.
